NIMIKA | Summer's End

I scheduled another photo session with Nimika Thapa in SoHo to mark the end of summer. Nimika is currently a senior at NYC's Hunter College, studying human biology; an interdisciplinary area of academic study that examines humans through the influences and interplay of many diverse fields such as genetics, anatomy, nutrition and sociocultural influence.

Feast of San Gennaro | 2022

I make it a point of not missing the annual Feast of San Gennaro in Little Italy, and this year was/is no different as it's a street photography cornucopia. I grabbed my Fujifilm X-Pro2 and X-Pro3, and joined the crowds over two days...walking up and down Mulberry street a few times, snapping to my heart's content. No one minded...not even the carnival worker who-presumably because of the two cameras dangling from my neck- yelled "Hey rich guy!!! let me see what you can do with this basket ball!!! "

Since its founding in 1926, the festival – named for the patron saint of Naples in Italy – has grown and transformed beyond what was just a small neighborhood block party some decades ago, according to several longtime vendors. Favorite games like roulette and the grease pole climb have disappeared due to gambling laws and insurance. Food stalls sell tacos, boba tea, and cornbread alongside Italian-American staples like sausage spirals and cannolis. And Little Italy has significantly shrunk as gentrification takes hold.

According to The Gothamist, several of the vendors were people of color – like Black, Mexican, Salvadoran, Yemeni, or Asian, selling everything from barbacoa to street art. I conversed with an Indian woman who had set up an immaculate tented booth to apply henna on hands and arms of young women.

SARAN KILLS IT!

I've created a video to incorporate a movie clip of Saran, and a half dozen photographs of her in Soho. It supplements my earlier post Saran: The Catwalk.

Yurika | Born To Dance

It was my good fortune to connect with Yurika Ono, a professional dancer and dance student in NYC through a mutual social media platform, which allowed us to plan and schedule a photo session on Crosby street. It's my understanding that she trains/studies ensemble dance based on a broad spectrum of movement rooted in classical training.

Crosby street - which I describe as being in "East" Soho is ideal for this sort of photographic endeavor as there's less vehicular and foot traffic than the rest of Soho that teems with shoppers and pedestrians. It also has a combination of dark walls as useful backdrops, as well as colorful graffiti that I tend to favor.

SARAN | The Catwalk

I scheduled a photo session with Saran at "the SoHo Trifecta" aka Wooster, Greene and Mercer streets...which I consider to be my "personal" fiefdom in terms of runways or catwalks.

Saran's unique style lent itself extremely well to the surroundings, and she posed with the utmost professionalism. I initially suggested she wore all black -which would've accentuated her bleached hair and eyebrows- but she preferred brown and beige...which worked well too.
